Keeping ADR Knowledge Fresh: Toolbox Talk
At Smart Waste Solutions, safety and compliance are at the heart of everything we do — especially when it comes to the transportation of hazardous materials. With new starters joining the team and ADR certification renewals taking place at different times, ongoing training and refresher sessions are essential to ensure everyone is up to date.
That’s why our latest Toolbox Talk, led by Nick Sighe, our in-house Senior Technical Assessor and Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA), focused on ADR Instructions in Writing, Safety Awareness, and Equipment Familiarisation.
Focus on ADR Safety
The session placed a strong emphasis on ADR safety — ensuring that drivers understand not only what they’re carrying, but also how to react safely and responsibly in any situation involving hazardous waste.
As part of this, our Transport Manager, Dave, carried out a live demonstration of a vehicle check, highlighting the key areas of inspection specific to ADR transport. This included ensuring the correct display of orange boards, condition of safety equipment, and overall vehicle readiness for transporting dangerous goods. It was a practical reminder of how critical these checks are in day-to-day operations.
Understanding Instructions In Writing
Drivers were also taken through the Instructions in Writing (IIW) — the quick-reference emergency document that must be carried at all times when transporting dangerous goods.
Colleagues were invited to identify pieces of ADR equipment listed in the IIW and explain their purpose. This interactive approach encouraged discussion and allowed drivers to learn from each other, with Nick on hand to provide clarification and expert guidance where needed.
Demonstration of Equipment – Mandatory and More
Alongside the mandatory ADR kit, additional safety equipment was also demonstrated. These extra items reflect Smart Waste’s proactive approach to going above and beyond compliance requirements, ensuring that our drivers are well prepared for every scenario.
Working in Pairs? Equipment Duplication Matters
For jobs that require a second crew member, drivers were briefed on which ADR items need to be duplicated. In an emergency, both individuals must be ready and equipped to respond — another example of how Smart Waste builds safety into every layer of our service.
Building Confidence Through Knowledge
Whether you're new to the industry or brushing up on long-standing knowledge, ADR training is not a one-off event — it’s a continual process. This toolbox talk was another step in strengthening the team's competence and confidence.
Thanks to Nick for leading the session and to Dave for the live vehicle check demo. A big shoutout as well to all our drivers for engaging, asking questions, and contributing to a great session.
